History of the Sacré-CŒur's

SACRÉ-CŒUR Sacré-CŒur's iconic domes and bright white facade are a treasured feature of the Paris skyline. Overlooking Paris from high atop Montmartre, it also offers spectacular views of the French capital. Sitting proudly atop Montmartre, the Basilica of Sacré-Cœur occupies the highest point in Paris and is a distinctive figure in the city’s skyline. Consecrated in 1919, the basilica’s Byzantine-inspired features and bleached white travertine facade set it apart from other monuments and historic buildings in the City of Light. The origins of Sacré-Cœur are unique and its distinctive exterior. Struggling to recover from decades of internal turmoil and a recent military defeat, the basilica was built to remedy “a century of moral decline” in France, and is as much a symbol of civic pride as it is a place of worship. Today Sacré-Cœur still operates as a Roman Catholic Church dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, but also welcomes tourists who come to ad

Arc de Triomphe Paris

Arc de Triomphe Paris  There is no doubt that everyone visiting Paris for a vacation is going to want to get a great shot in front of the world’s most famous Arch for Instagram. The  Arc de Triomphe Paris , the most monumental of all triumphal arches, was built between 1806 and 1836. The Arc de Triomphe stands at the center of the Place Charles de Gaulle, also known as the “Place de l’Étoile”. It’s located at the western end of the Champs-Élysées. The arches whole decorative style is entirely of the tradition of sculpture from the first half of the nineteenth century. The triumphal arch is in honor of those who fought for France (and in particular, those who fought during the Napoleonic wars). Engraved on the inside and at the top of the arch are a

Flame of Liberty

Flame of Liberty    It is the eve of the 20th anniversary of the death of Diana Princess of Wales, and I am at the site where the fatal car crash took place that August night in Paris in 1997. “We’ll never forget you,” is one of many notes scrawled in blue marker on the concrete entrance to the underpass on the north side of Pont de l’Alma. It is no surprise that over the ensuing years the area has become something of a shrine to the much-loved princess. Tributes centre mainly around a large burnished flame, mounted on a marble plinth, metres from the tunnel mouth. Along its base, somebody has carefully placed a series of hand-made collages, featuring pictures of the late princess and the number “20”, framed in heart-shaped garlands of red roses. More pictures of Diana have been tacked to the base too, from formal royal portraits to emotive shots of the mother with her sons William and Harry. Flowers are laid here all year round, but this week there are more th
